Project F150 Coil Replacement
Project F150 - Coil Replacement
Adding the spark of a higher power with a fresh set of Accel Super Coils
story and photography by Tom Shaw
If you want to get your engine fired up with extra power, you’re going to need a spark for the ignition just prior to the blastoff. Accel, long a leader in high-performance ignition products had just what we need for our Project F150 in their SuperCoil 8-pack. They’re part number 140032-8. Each coil (this engine uses 1 per cylinder) uses premium materials and have optimized windings, and ACCEL claims 10-15% more energy than OEM coils. Naturally, the bodies are bright yellow which add the unmistakable hi-perf visual.
Installation is a breeze as you’ll see. The only things that need to be removed are the big rubber intake tract, a hose on the passenger’s side, and a power steering bracket on the driver’s side. So let’s break out the tools and get going.

1. It’s big, but the intake tract on our 2004 Project F150 truck comes out easily after loosening the clamp on the throttle body and unhooking the PCV hose and an air sensor. Set it aside. |

2. Coil connectors are black, fuel injectors are gray. Pinch the coil connector’s releases and it will pull out from the coil. |

3. Just one bolt, a 7mm, holds each coil in. Remove it and set it in a safe place. |

4. The coil pulls off the plug and out of the engine. |

5. While we’re in there, we’re removing and replacing the plugs too. These have close to 100,000 miles. |
